GPVWC Round 11: Simončič wins in wet conditions at the Italian Grand Prix

Round 11 of the GPVWC Superleague at Monza was supposed to follow up the dramatic ending to the previous race at Circuit Spa-Francorchamps. But a whole different drama provided the action.

Jernej Simončič qualified on pole position just seven thousands of a second faster than Adam Maguire. Robin Pansar continued his great form in recent rounds by putting his Burst Esport Basilea car in fourth place.

A great start from Jernej saw him keeping the lead with Robin following along still inside the top 5. A couple of laps defending from Maguire and De Wall saw him firstly concede a position til Maguire, but when De Wall tried to over Jernej into turn one, the Slovenian showed great racecraft and experience to see that De Wall out braked himself and hit his teammate, which meant that Jernej retook the lead.
Robin saw a gap to get into the top 3, but he got a light tap in curve grande, which sent him off the track but still able to continue after rejoining the track in P12. Jernej made a great start and were up into second place and Robin avoided all the drama around him where multiple cars had contact with each other and stayed in 10th.

Ten laps further into the race the sky’s had opened and the rain was falling at the temple of speed. A switch to intermediate tyres was necessary but Jernej got jumped by Maguire and De Wall who had pitted a few laps earlier. On lap 22, Jernej tried to overtake De Wall around the outside, but the Dutchman didn’t leave enough space for them both and send the Jernej onto the gravel trap and three positions down.

He refused to give up and got his head down. He caught up to De Wall once again and this time he managed to get past, and only Adam Maguire was ahead. Jernej put in a world class drive to catch him on the last lap and pass him for the lead and take his second win of the season!
A monster drive from Jernej Simončič, but also Robin Pansar recovered well from the incident at the start to finish in P7.

Jernej stays in 3rd in the driver’s standings while Robin jumps to 14th.  S
